Nicaragua Finca Pernille

112,00 kr

This coffee is grown in Nueva Segovia as Finca Pernille. Right on the Dipilto y Jalapa mountain range that separates Nicaragua from Honduras. The Arabica beans are processed and dried before being shipped directly to our roastery.

"Nicaragua has been a staple origin at Amokka for a long time. Thanks to our long-standing relationship with the team at Cafe Nor, we are able to receive fantastic beans directly from farm to roastery. Resulting in a much shorter value chain and a fresher crop.

Finca Pernille is a smooth, soft and round coffee with great nutty and spicy flavours. The citrusy acidity helps balance the coffee resulting in a cup we can drink day in and day out."

It was in 1795 that Arabica coffee was first introduced to Nicaragua. Still, it was a rocky start hindered further by earthquakes and hurricanes, as well as civil wars within the country and U.S bans on imports during the cold war. It was not until the late 20th century that the Nicaraguan coffee industry thrived and was able to stand on its own feet, supporting nearly 300 000 workers, and all thanks to its coffee farmers that persisted throughout the disruptions.

Almost 95% of the coffee grown in Nicaragua is high altitude shade-grown. Growing coffee on altitudes between 3600 and 5200 feet above sea level helps it meet the Strictly High Grown coffee specifications, along with a fertile volcanic soil and a favoring climate. Some of the best Arabica coffee varietals are grown in Nicaragua, such as Bourbon, Typica, Catimor, Caturra etc. Many farms are located amongst wild forest and coffee is often grown under the protection of shade trees.

Frederik Zeuthen of Café Nor is one of our longest-standing collaboration partners. He is managing two farms in Nicaragua, Finca Jesper and Finca Susanne. The two neighbouring farms are located in Laguna Verde, almost on the border between Jinotega and Matagalpa, at an altitude of 1400m. The area has lots of rain and sun year-out and an abundance of animal life.

The coffee grown here is almost wholly shade-grown, and each farm has its own water resources, which are also shared with the local community. The water from the wet milling processes is filtered, and with the help of gravity pumps, the so-called 'honey-water' can be utilised to irrigate the coffee plants. The coffee pulp is composted and also used as a natural fertiliser.

In addition to growing their own coffee, they also work with regional farmer collaborators who provide the bulk of their Specialty Coffee for their different profiles. It's always the aim to pay at the farm gate to the farmer to ensure that they and their families enjoy the main economic benefits. All farmers have access to technical assistance in the different aspects of growing and processing to help them improve the quality of coffee and the sustainability of their use of land, water and forest resources. Additional access to financing is also provided, with contracts for getting loans with local micro-financing institutions or – in special cases – directly by NOR.

Café Nor, with the help of Amokka, has invested heavily over the years to develop their facilities. With the help of our Impact Trade initiative, the farm has installed solar panels to heat water (for drying coffee, amongst other things) and generate electricity. The farm aims to fully combat the use of diesel generators and be 100% renewable.

Finca Pernille is a premium profile from Café Nor. This coffee is from farmers on the Dipilto y Jalapa mountain range that separates Nicaragua from Honduras. The Arabica beans are processed and dried before being shipped directly to our roastery.
